Augustus Mitchell was one of the leading publishers of maps and atlases in the United States during the nineteenth century. Mitchell published his first atlas in 1831 and in 1845 purchased the rights to Henry Tanner's "New Universal Atlas" which he undated and published in 1846. In 1850 Mitchell sold the rights to Thomas, Cowperthwait & Company which then sold it to Charles Desilver. (c.1855) Desilver in turn licensed it to the Baltimore firm of Cushings & Bailey who printed at least two editions. Each publisher changed the atlas by updating and adding new maps and altering the scrollwork borders the surround each map. The issues by Desilver are scarce, the Cushing's & Bailey imprints are the most difficult to obtain.
