Often referred to as "Squawk Birds" because of a "Quawk" vocalization they occasionally make, they are one of the most common herons in the United States. They are an international species also found in Hawaii, South America, Europe, Japan, Africa, and India. In the United States, the northern population migrates south in the winter to warmer habitats, while some of the population resides in the south year-round.
