DESCRIPTION: Nathaniel Currier and a gentleman known only as Stodart started the legendary firm of Currier & Ives in 1834. The partnership between Currier & Stodart was not strong and Stodart left within a year of their partnership. Therefore prints with the Stodart & Currier imprint are very rare. There are at least four different views of the building made by Stodart & Currier the other three are catalogued in Cunningham. Impressions can be found with only the upper or lower image, although we are fairly sure this was a commissioned job likely paid by Town or Davies to promote their design for the Astor’s Hotel.

This lithograph is a proposal for the design of the “Astor’s Hotel” the proposal by Ithiel Town and Alexander Jackson Davis was not accepted by John Jacob Astor. The hotel, designed by Isaiah Rogers, opened to the public in 1836 and remained in operation until 1913 when part of the building was demolished for subway construction. The remainder was demolished in 1926. When the hotel opened it was the first luxury hotel in New York City, it was located on the Corner of Broadway and Vesey Street.
