DESCRIPTION: One of the first maps of the new nation's Capital. The author of this map, James Hardie, arrived in Philadelphia from New York in 1792. He was a writer, proofreader, and occasional bookseller. In 1793 he published the first post-revolution guide or directory to the city. In the first edition this map was omitted due to the fact that he could not have it engraved in time. In 1794, or second edition, the map was inserted into the guide and was also sold separately. In 1795 Hardie sold out his inventory and Thomas Stephens bought the rights to the directory and changed the map to read "Stephens Plan of the City of Philadelphia." The Stephens edition was issued only once in 1796.

This manuscript was likely done soon after the Stephens reissue in 1796. It is drawn on period laid paper and was folded down to fit into a book or envelope. This cataloger feels that it based on the Stephens plan rather than the original for the plan. There is a manuscript title on the verso "Stephens Plan".
