  • DESCRIPTION: A handsome regional map of the Vicentine district in the Venetian Terraferma, extending from the Valsugana and Trento in the north to Padova and Montagnana in the south. Compiled by Giovanni Antonio Magini and issued posthumously in his Italia (Bologna, 1620), the first systematic atlas devoted entirely to the Italian peninsula, this map focuses on settlements, roads, and hydrography, with the Brenta and Bacchiglione rivers prominently delineated. Relief is rendered pictorially, capturing the foothills rising toward the Asiago plateau and the Alps. The title appears in a bold strapwork cartouche at lower left, paired with an ornate dedicatory panel honoring a Bolognese noble of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus. Towns are shown as red crenellated icons, with Vicenza prominently placed at the center; smaller places such as Thiene, Schio, Bassano, Cittadella, Arzignano, and Montecchio are carefully labeled in an elegant italic script. Under Venetian rule, Vicenza thrived through agriculture, silk, and stoneworking, while the upland valleys connected the city with Trentino via the Brenta corridor. Magini’s depiction captures this economic and geographic network, offering one of the most authoritative surveys of the Veneto in the early seventeenth century.
