  • DESCRIPTION: Morrisania has a rich history; the land was first purchased by Richard Morris, the Great Grand father of Lewis Morris who in 1762 inherited 'Morrisania' - "He devoted himself to the management of his large estate and became a successful farmer." Lewis Morris was involved with the Continental Congress and offered this land for the site of the U. S. Capital in 1790. This village, in the southwest corner of what is now the Bronx, grew rapidly after 1840 with the introduction of the railroad. It was incorporated as a town in 1855. Early industries included breweries and piano manufacturers. Sections of Morrisania were used to create Crotona and St. Mary's parks.
