  • DESCRIPTION: An early representation of Op Art from one of the pioneer of the movement.<br><br> Signed and dated in ink. "Pearson 1959".<br><br> Henry Pearson 1914-2006) Born in Kinston, North Carolina. Studied art at the University of North Carolina where he received his B.A. and later at Yale University where he received an M.F.A. Pearson spent eleven years in the army during and after WWII where he worked on topographical maps in the Pacific theater.<br> Pearson returned to the United States in 1953 and enrolled at the Art Students League in New York where he studied with Reginald Marsh and Will Barnet The Op-Art Movement was beginning to gain popularity and Pearson’s interest in topography and the landscape lead him to experiment with optical effects and his own fine line drawings. Today he is considered to be one of the pioneer in the movement. His artwork was included in the Museum of Modern Art exhibition The Responsive Eye. (1965). He later received a retrospective exhibition at the North Carolina Museum of Art in 1969.<br><br> This particular drawing retains the original sales label from the Stephen Radich Gallery where the title is given. It also bears a inventory or stock number “1657” from the gallery.
