Carte de la Geographie Sacree Contenant les Noms des Descendans de Noe depius leur sorte de L'Arche en 1657.

  • ARTIST: Pierre Moullart Sanson

  • MEDIUM: Copper plate engraving

    DATE: c.1704

  • EDITION SIZE: Image size 16 x 21 7/8" (40.4 x 55.5 cm)

  • DESCRIPTION: A map of the Holy Land and surrounding regions as referenced in the Old Testament. The map features the Mediterranean, North Africa, the Middle East, and parts of southern Europe, illustrating biblical locations and historical geography.

An unusual variant state of this map. The map seems to be some sort of a early proof before the title was engraved on the plate. The title seen on this is actually a separate plate. Later examples of the map come with a title on the plate and with additional cartographic information.

Pierre Moullart-Sanson was the son of Françoise Sanson (third child of Nicolas) and Pierre Moullart. He restarted the publishing of Sanson's world atlas, and in 1704 he acquired a privilege for publishing all the works of Nicolas and Guillaume Sanson, which continued to be published until 1730. It is quite likely this was one of the maps that he acquired in 1704.

Very curious and seemingly unrecorded.
