  • DESCRIPTION: copperplate engraving of the African continent by the renowned London cartographer Herman Moll, published in the fourth edition of The Compleat Geographer. At the time of this map's publication in 1723, Africa was viewed by the British public primarily through the lens of maritime commerce and speculative geography. While the coastlines were mapped with increasing accuracy to support the "Age of Sail," the interior remained largely a mystery to Europeans, leading cartographers like Moll to rely on Ptolemaic traditions and traveler's lore to fill the vast central voids.
