DESCRIPTION: The Battle of Mill Springs, fought on January 19, 1862, in Kentucky, was one of the first major Union victories of the Civil War. Under Generals George H. Thomas and Albin Schoepff, Union troops faced Confederate forces led by General Felix Zollicoffer and General George Crittenden. Zollicoffer was killed early in the fighting, causing confusion in the Southern ranks, and the Union advance quickly turned the clash into a decisive rout. The Confederates abandoned their artillery, wagons, and supplies as they fled south across the Cumberland River. This victory secured eastern Kentucky for the Union and gave a much-needed boost to Northern morale at the beginning of the war.
