DESCRIPTION: This engraved view by Thos. Silver, A View of the Town and Castle of St. Augustine, and the English Camp before it, June 20, 1740, presents a striking pictorial record of General James Oglethorpe’s ill-fated siege of the Spanish fortress during the War of Jenkins’ Ear. The print captures both the English encampment and the fortified town, with a lettered key identifying troop positions, vessels, and batteries. Despite the scale of the attack, the siege failed, and Oglethorpe was forced to retreat to Georgia, leaving St. Augustine in Spanish hands. The engraving thus stands as both a contemporary depiction of one of the southernmost battles of the colonial era and a reminder of the shifting balance of power between Britain and Spain in eighteenth-century North America.
