DESCRIPTION: This 1671 engraving of Havana appears in John Ogilby’s America: Being the Latest, and Most Accurate Description of the New World. It is based on Arnoldus Montanus’ Die Nieuwe en Onbekende Weereld and is largely a direct copy, though Ogilby expanded it with additional material on the English colonies.

The view portrays Havana as a grand city of churches and domes, though in reality, it was a fortified village. Strategically located on Cuba’s northern coast along the Spanish trade route, Havana’s deep harbor, shipyard, and fertile lands made it a crucial stop for fleets awaiting favorable conditions for their return to Europe.
