  • DESCRIPTION: This impressive genealogical chart is a wonderful example of Chatelain’s elegant engravings. Included in the 1720 edition of Atlas Historique, published by Chatelain in Amsterdam, this large chart is the third plate in volume two. This highly detailed plate charts the entire royal line of the great Saxon chief Witikind. Witikind was one of the principal leaders in the Saxon revolt against Charlemagne, he survived numerous invasions but was finally forced to surrender in 785, when he was baptized into the Catholic church. The tree includes a wealth of information including historical notes and death dates. A detailed key identifying some of the more noted figures is included in the bottom left corner of the sheet. This highly detailed plate is a wonderful example from Chatelain’s important text.
