  • DESCRIPTION: A detailed and quite beautiful plan of the city of The Hague. This plan was originally issued by Joan Blaeu in 1646, appearing in his town book of the Netherlands. Frederick de Witt (1630-1706) was a Dutch mathematician and cartographer. He apprenticed to Willem Blaeu, one of the leading cartographers in the world at that time. He later acquired a large portion of Blaeu printing plates. Born in Gouda, De Witt in 1661 moved to and obtained citizenship in Amsterdam through his marriage to Maria van der Waag. De Witt became a "goede mannen" or excellent citizen on the roll of the city council in the years 1694-1704, which at the time was quite difficult because he was Catholic. "One of the most famous engravers of maps of the second half of the 17th century." (Koeman).
