DESCRIPTION: From copyright photographs by E.S. Curtis. Photogravure Soffolk Eng. Co. Cambridge, Mass. <br><br> Edward Sheriff Curtis published "The North American Indian" between 1907 and 1930. The twenty-volume series recorded the various Native American cultures spread across the country, although it also contained Euro-American biases which were typical of the time. Each of the descriptive volume were accompanied by a portfolio of large photogravure plates. This particular photogravure was included in Volume 11, "The Nootka. The Haida." <br><br> The Nootka people are better known today as the Nuu-chah-nulth. They reside in areas around the southwestern coast of Canada and northwestern parts of Washington State, USA. The Haida are indigenous to Haida Gwaii, British Columbia, Canada and some of the islands near Alaska, USA. They are noted as being the original settlers of the Pacific Northwest.
