Edited by Philip Lutley Sclater. Published by Henry Graves & Co., London, 1861. The superbly drawn and highly colored lithographs in this work are the finest examples of Wolf's skills as an animal illustrator. In David Knight's Zoological Illustration, Wolf is described as "perhaps the finest of all illustrators of natural history." He "had a firm grasp of anatomy, and had carefully and lovingly observed wild animals so that his pictures are both accurate and valuable from the zoological point of view, and also very lifelike." Born in Prussia, Wolf emigrated to England in 1848. He spent many years working with ornithological artist John Gould and had a continuing relationship with the Zoological Society. [Knight, Zool.
