  • DESCRIPTION: This double-page map of the United States and Territories, extending coast to coast and including southern parts of Canada, comes from Mitchell's New General Atlas, a significant 19th-century work known for its accessible and richly illustrated cartography. Framed by a decorative “rose and flower vine” border, a signature embellishment of Mitchell’s later maps, the piece captures the political geography of the Civil War United States when expansion and reconstruction were actively reshaping the nation. Territories in the West are clearly delineated, emphasizing the country’s growth and the still developing frontier. The detailed engraving is finely hand-colored, highlighting state boundaries, rivers, railroads, and topographic features with precision and clarity. An inset of Newfoundland occupies the upper right corner.
