DESCRIPTION: An extremely rare broadside map of the village of Nantucket showing the area that destroyed by fire on July 13th, 1846. The worst fire in Nantucket's history began in a defective stovepipe at 11:00 pm at W. H. Geary's hat store on Nantucket's Main Street. Within an hour, it was burning out of control consuming everything in its path. Contributing to the fire were barrels of whale oil that were stored on the wharves; when the fire reached them, they burst into flames. The burning oil flowed into the water, creating what one man described as "a sea of fire." When dawn broke the next day, more then 250 buildings, fully one third of the town had been destroyed. Approximately 800 people were homeless. Total losses were in excess of $1,000,000 (the equivalent of approximately $24,000,000 today). The fire had lasting consequences: it contributed to the demise of Nantucket as the world capital of the whaling industry. Printed by J. H. Bufford & Co., Boston.
