DESCRIPTION: Map no. 6 from the supplement to the Diderot and d'Alembert Encyclopaedie, 1770-1779. In this two-part map, the upper chart illustrates Philippe Buache's speculative cartography for Northwest America while still including the track of the 1741 Russian exploratory voyage. The map strongly suggests the existence of a Northwest Passage and clearly maps the non-existent Mer de l'Ouest. The second map shows the same area as mapped by Kaempfer.
