O. B. de Stackelberg, antiquarian draughtman, was born in Estonia in 1786. He studied first in Dresden, and finished education in Rome, whence, in 1810, he went with an exploring party to Greece. Here they came upon the remains of the Temple of Apollo at Bassae (Bassge). They brought some sculptures back to their own countries. The 35ginetan marbles are now in the Glyptothek in Munich. Cella friezes were bought by the British Government and placed in the British Museum, where they remain today. Stackelberg made exact drawings of all of these which he published in 1826. He also published a series of views of "modern" Greece, drawings of Greek costumes and customs, and a work on ancient Greek sculpture. He travelled later in Italy and discovered some ancient Etruscan frescoes, to which another book was devoted. He died in St. Petersburg in 1837.
