Francis Dodd, Draughtsman, painter and printmaker, especially of portraits.
Born at Holyhead, Anglesey. Studied at Glasgow School of Art under Fra Newbery and Archibald Kay. He lived in Manchester for approximately 10 years then settled in Blackheath in southeast London, which he often painted and drew. Dodd was an Official War Artist during World War I and was a trustee of the Tate Gallery, 1928–35, being elected to the Royal Academy in 1935.
Brother-in-law to the artist Muirhead Bone.
Dodd was a particularly talented portraitist. He was not only able to capture his sitters’ physiognomy, but their personality as well. Among the portraits he etched and printed in drypoint. Portraits of his artist friends are considered among his finest works.
