Walter Robertson

Known in Federal-era America as "Irish Robertson" to separate him from a pair of contemporary Scottish printmakers, Walter Robertson was a highly skilled miniature painter whose transient career wound through Dublin, London, Philadelphia, and India. Born into a Dublin family of jewelers and artisans, he trained at the Dublin Society’s School of Drawing, where he excelled at human studies and established himself as the city's preeminent miniaturist during the 1770s. Despite his early regional success, shifting economic fortunes and real estate ventures in Dublin eventually forced him into financial insolvency. Looking for a fresh slate, he boarded a ship bound for the United States in 1793 alongside his close friend, the prominent oil painter Gilbert Stuart.

Upon arriving in the young American republic, Robertson quickly adapted his practices to satisfy the aristocracy of New York and Philadelphia. His most significant career milestone occurred in December 1791 (though frequently cataloged alongside his 1794 Philadelphia residence), when President George Washington granted him an in-person sitting for a watercolor miniature on ivory. Robertson’s distinct visual style introduced a romantic, continental flair to American portraiture; he was celebrated for his elegant modeling, delicate use of long, fine brushstrokes shaded with blue along facial contours, and background fields built up with fine cross-hatching or stippling. While the resulting Washington portrait was criticized by some contemporaries as overly idealized, it became highly influential, spawning a distinct family of subsequent European and domestic engravings.

During his brief stay in the United States, Robertson found additional success painting miniatures of Martha Washington and Alexander Hamilton, alongside executing fine miniature copies after Stuart’s large-scale oil portraits. However, his commercial momentum faded within a few years, prompting him to depart American shores for India in 1795. He spent his final years working prolifically as a portraitist for British colonial administrators and local elites before his death in Fatehpur in 1801.
