• DESCRIPTION: The Last of the Buffalo is Albert Bierstadt's final, great, western painting. The original painting hangs in the National Gallery of Art and measures a massive six by ten feet. When painted the Buffalo population was on the verge of extinction with only about 1,000 left from 30 million at the beginning of the 19th century. It is believed that the photogravure work was done by Goupil & Company of Paris. There are only a handful of major prints produced after Bierstadt’s paintings. “The Rocky Mountains” hanging in the Metropolitan Museum is one example which was produced as an engraving and a chromolithograph. “The Domes of the Yosemite” and “Storm in the Rocky Mountains, Mt. Rosalie” are both chromolithographs. “The Last of the Buffalo” was commissioned and published by Albert Bierstadt. It is likely that Bierstadt was thinking of preservation of these magnificent beasts when he issued it.
