Johann Friedrich Leonart

(1633 - 1680)

Johann Friedrich Leonart (also Leonard or Leonhart), born in 1633—possibly in Dunkirk—and deceased in 1680, was a German copper engraver active in the European centers of Prague, Brussels, and Berlin. He specialized in finely detailed portrait engravings and stylistic reproductions of artworks by earlier masters, combining technical precision with ornamental framing. His prints, such as an engraving after Durer’s portrait of a “Woman with Coiled Hair” via Hollar, and mezzotint-style portraits like "Isabella van Assche" after Van Dyck, reflect both his technical skill and his engagement with visual traditions across regions.
