DESCRIPTION: Sir Henry Clinton (1738-1795) served as a British general in the American Revolution. The son of former governor George Clinton, Henry began his career in the New York militia and served in Germany during the Seven Years’ War. By 1772, Clinton had risen to the rank of Major General. He served in Parliament from 1772 to 1774. Sir Henry Clinton fought valiantly in the Battle of Bunker Hill, and succeeded Gen. William Howe. His difficult professional and personal relationship with Gen. Charles Cornwallis lead to Clinton’s eventual resignation and return to England in 1781. Sir Henry Clinton was later appointed a full general and the governor of Gibraltar. Engraved by Cook.
