DESCRIPTION: Oval portrait, inscribed "Commander of His Majesty's Fleet in North America. Rear Admiral of the Blue." Samuel Lord Hood (1727-1816) served as a British Admiral in the Navy. He was sent by the crown to serve as a second in command to George Brydges Rodney in the West Indies throughout the duration of the American Revolution. Hood went on to enter Parliament as a representative from Westminster and was appointed vice-admiral. During the French Revolution, Hood was sent to the Mediterranean to serve as Commander in Chief. He served for over a year before returning to England and attaining full Admiral status in 1794. Hood was named governor of Greenwich Hospital, a title which he held until his death in 1816.
