• DESCRIPTION: This handcolored etching, line and stipple engraving from the 1820s, titled Modes Parisiennes, Observateur des Modes, No. 189, beautifully typifies the Parisian fashion scene of its time. The text translates to: "Bureau rue Feydeau, No 20. Hairstyle adorned with chrysanthemums, by Mr. Narcisse Cornu: tulle dress decorated with satin rouleaux and bouquets of chrysanthemums: silk knit scarf." Published in Paris.

The 1820s were a dynamic decade for women's fashion, marked by a transition from the high waistlines and puffed sleeves of the early years to more elaborate and romantic styles. As waistlines lowered, skirts were adorned with layers of decoration, including lace, flounces, and intricate trims, creating a whimsical and opulent look. Sleeves became a canvas for creativity, featuring dramatic puffs, slashes, and elaborate designs inspired by historic dress. The engravings in Petit Courrier des Dames bring these changes to life, vividly illustrating the evolution of fashion with their detailed and colorful depictions of elegant opera dresses and daywear, capturing the romance and imagination of the era.
