  • DESCRIPTION: From "Les Fleurs Aminees." Initially published in two volumes (first edition 1846), this collection of romantic tales by Taxile Delord, editor of the satirical newspaper "Le Charivari," was illustrated with hand-colored engravings by the famous French caricaturist, J.J. Grandville. Each of the engravings depicted a flower in feminine form, such as village girls, ballerinas, nuns, nurses and queens, and often had them dressed in comical versions of contemporary fashion. "Le Fleurs Aminees" was highly acclaimed following its publication.<br><br> Grandville's brilliant yet brief career had been established earlier with "Scenes de la Vie Privee et Publique des Animaux" (1842-44), which depicted animals as contemporary social and political types.
