DESCRIPTION: Engraved by B. Picart after Jacques le Moyne de Morgues, the artist who accompanied the earliest French settlement parties to Florida. From "Ceremonies et Coutumes Religieuses de Tous les Peuples du Monde." The top scene shows widows grieving to the king while hermaphrodites in the background are caring for the ill and burying the dead. The lower scene shows Indian women sprinkling cuttings of their hair onto the graves of their husbands who were killed in battle. The graves are also decorated with conches that served as the drinking cups for the deceased warriors as well as their bows and quivers.
