DESCRIPTION: Engraved by Will Pass (Willem de Passe). George Chapman (1559-1634) was an Englishman who started out as a playwright and then went on to become best known for his translations of Homer's poetry. After translating the Iliad and Odyssey, he did a book of Homeric hymns and the story "Batrachomyomachia." for which this is the title page. Pictured are Homer with a crown of laurel on top; Apollo is holding a musical instrument; Hermes holds his caduceus and Pallas is on the right.
