This view of the Commencement of the Action between His Majesty's Ship Shannon and the United States Frigate Chesapeake off Boston Light House on the 1st of June 1813 is respectfully dedicated by his lordships obedient servt. G. Wevster." In this renowned War of 1812 naval battle, the "Chesapeake," commanded by Capt. James Lawrence, sailed out of Boston harbor to meet the waiting British ship "Shannon," commanded by Capt. P.B.V. Broke. The result was a lopsided victory for the British. It is remembered in American naval history as the occasion when the dying Captain Lawrence uttered the brave words "Don't give up the ship." But the captured "Chesapeake" was taken as a prize to Halifax; Captain Broke was later knighted.
