Among the decorative fashions created for 18th-century stately homes in England were sets of allegorical and realistic representations of the seasons, continents and virtues. Fairburn specialized in such prints and produced some of the finest examples. In this series, all with outdoor settings, a young couple, accompanied by small children, engages in activities typical of the season: gathering springtime flowers, summer haying, apple-gathering in fall, and winter ice-skating.

Under each title line is a poem to match the season by Scottish author, James Thompson.
