Campeche was the first Spanish settlement on the Yucatan peninsula. Founded on October 4 1540, the city became one of the most important shipping ports in America. The riches amassed by the Spanish Crown in Campeche were a constant enticement to privateers and pirates. who continually besieged and plundered the city. In the foreground are several galleons.
