DESCRIPTION: This lithograph, based on a painting by Thomas Sully, portrays John McLean (1785–1861), a distinguished American jurist and statesman. McLean's exceptional career spanned all three branches of the U.S. government: as a congressman, Postmaster General, and Associate Justice of both the Ohio and U.S. Supreme Courts. He is remembered for his staunch opposition to slavery, most notably through his dissenting opinion in the landmark case Dred Scott v. Sandford.
