DESCRIPTION: The plate depicts Menyanthes trifoliata L., commonly known as buckbean or bogbean, a perennial aquatic plant native to the wetlands, marshes, and bogs of Europe, Asia, and North America. The species is distinguished by its trifoliate leaves and striking clusters of white to pale pink flowers, each petal fringed with delicate hairs. For centuries bogbean occupied an important place in herbal medicine, where its intensely bitter leaves were used as a tonic and digestive aid. It was frequently prescribed to stimulate appetite and was included in numerous European pharmacopoeias during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

This engraving is from Plenck's scarce "Icones Plantarum Medicinalium Secundum Systema Linnaei Digestarum." This work was devoted to the medicinal properties of native European plants. Many had never been illustrated before. The engravings have a freshness and simplicity that charms collectors today.
