  • DESCRIPTION: Tab. 57. Perhaps best known for the natural red dye that can be created from its roots, Rubia Tinctorum also has a history as an herb. While not recommended for use today, as it's believed to cause cancer, historically it was used as an astringent, laxative, diuretic, prevent pregnancy and induce an abortion.<br><br> This engraving is from Plenck's scarce "Icones Plantarum Medicinalium Secundum Systema Linnaei Digestarum." This work was devoted to the medicinal properties of native European plants. Many had never been illustrated before. The engravings have a freshness and simplicity that charms collectors today.
