Today, it is home to the Philadelphia History Museum.

The Franklin Institute was founded by Samuel V. Merrick and William H. Keating in 1824, and was named after one of America's earliest and most important scientists, Benjamin Franklin. The institute was one of the leading institutions for scientific development and education in early America. Dedicated to the "promotion of the Mechanic Arts", the institute held public lectures and exhibitions, fostered research and managed a high school and library. One of the many influential lectures held at the Institute was made by William Seller in 1864, which ushered in the adoption of the American Standard Screw Thread (also known as: USS Thread, Sellers Standard thread, and the Franklin Institute thread).

Today the Franklin Institute is situated at 20th Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. It serves as a hands-on science museum and remains a center of science education and research. Every year, the Institute hosts the Franklin Institute Awards (or Benjamin Franklin Medals), which honors outstanding figures in various scientific fields. Some of the laureates have included Nikola Tesla, Thomas Edison, Albert Einstein, Edwin Hubble, Jane Goodall and Ruth Patrick.
