  • DESCRIPTION: This engraving depicts Frederick the Great, King of Prussia, after facing a significant defeat at the Battle of KolĂ­n on June 18, 1757, during the Seven Years' War. Leading 34,000 men, Frederick attempted to outflank a larger Austrian force of 54,000 under Count von Daun. His plan failed, resulting in a costly engagement that saw Prussian forces suffer nearly 14,000 casualties. This defeat forced Frederick to retreat, abandoning his siege of Prague and plans to advance on Vienna. In the print, Frederick is shown seated, appearing worried and defeated, reflecting the emotional strain and strategic setback of the battle.
