• DESCRIPTION: This mezzotint depicts William Pennington (1796–1862), a prominent American politician and lawyer who served as the 13th Governor of New Jersey from 1837 to 1843 and later as the Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1860 to 1861. A member of the Whig Party, Pennington's tenure as governor was marked by the "Broad Seal War," a political controversy over Congressional elections. After transitioning to the Republican Party, he was elected to Congress in 1858, where his election as Speaker required a protracted 44-ballot process. Pennington also signed the Corwin Amendment in 1861, an unsuccessful attempt to prevent Congress from interfering with state-sanctioned slavery. He passed away in 1862 and is interred at Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Newark.

A facsimile of William Pennington's signature is above the title line.
