DESCRIPTION: Signed and dated lower right "J .C. Spear Gloucester 1836."
The second great frigate victory of the war came on October 28, 1812, when the USS United States, Stephen Decatur commanding, encountered the HMS Macedonian some 500 miles west of the Canary Islands. The United States was a sister to the mighty Constitution, and the superior range of her 24-pounders (as against the Macedonian’s 18-pounders) and rate of fire soon left the British ship all-but dismasted and more than a third of her crew killed or wounded. Adding to the British humiliation, Decatur had the Macedonian repaired and sailed back to Newport, making her the first captured British warship ever to be brought into an American harbor.
This charming image by an amateur or student artist depicts the United States raking the bow of the Macedonian, which has already lost her topmasts.
