• ARTIST: Amos Doolittle

 • PUBLISHER: New Haven printed & sold wholesale by Amos Doolittle, August 14, 1806.

 • MEDIUM: Engraving,

 • EDITION SIZE: Plate size 20 1/4 x 16 3/8" (51.4 x 41.6 cm).

 • DESCRIPTION: According to Donald C. O'Brien in "Amos Doolittle Engraver of the New Republic" no impression with Thomas Jefferson survived although he notes that the Reverend William A. Beardsley knew of an impression, and James Terry wrote about an impression in the collection of Miss Stiles.

The portrait of Thomas Jefferson is a separate image that has been glued on top of the print. Under Jefferson’s portrait is the portrait of John Adams. It appears that Doolittle reused the final state of the “John Adams” plate version rather than engrave a new one. Thus, it was not updated to include Ohio, which became a State in 1803. Text surrounding the portrait reads “T. Jefferson President of the United States – Supporter of Liberty – True Republican & Friend of the Rights of Man.”

 • ADDITIONAL INFO: Original presentation, with remains of blue stitched border around outer edge, presumably to present as a printed wall hanging. This impression is also backed on newspaper “Albany Gazette” printed by Websters and Skinner and dated Thursday, October 9, 1806.

 • CONDITION: There are many condition issues, creasing, holes at creased intersections and within the portrait of Jefferson. In the lower right image area there are two flattened out printing creases that cause the neat line to be crooked. All this being said, it is in remarkably good condition, considering its age. The fact that it was meant to be presented as an unframed work on paper it is amazing that it survived at all.
