Schoolcraft, is featured in the first volume of Schoolcraft’s significant work, Historical and Statistical Information Respecting the History, Condition, and Prospects of the Indian Tribes of the United States. Schoolcraft, who identified Lake Itasca as the source of the Mississippi River in 1832, named the lake using Latin words meaning "truth" and "head." Eastman’s lithograph emphasizes the importance of this discovery in American exploration.<br><br> Seth Eastman, a skilled artist and topographical engineer, is renowned for his detailed portrayals of U.S. military sites and Native American life, particularly during his service at Fort Snelling in Minnesota.
