DESCRIPTION: Alexander Wilson (1766–1813), the pioneering American ornithologist, is best remembered for his monumental work American Ornithology (1808–1814), the first comprehensive study of North American birds. A Scottish-born poet and weaver, Wilson emigrated to the United States in 1794, where his passion for natural history led him to travel extensively across the country documenting avian species with remarkable accuracy and artistry. Engraved by David Edwin (1776–1841), an English-born printmaker who came to America in the late 18th century and worked with Edward Savage, this portrait honors Wilson’s lasting contribution as the founder of American ornithology.
