  • DESCRIPTION: Printed by 'The Milwaukee Litho. & Engr. Co.’ The bronze statue of Henry Bergh was created by sculptor James H. Mahoney in the late 19th century. Henry Bergh (1811-1888) established the 'American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.' A separate handwritten sign notes, "Statue and Fountain Erected in memory of Henry Bergh, Founder of Anticruelty work in America. This memorial was placed on Market Square, Milwaukee, Wis., through the efforts of the Wisconsin Humane Society. It cost $10,548.00 The fountain is 95 feet in circumference, 3 feet across the rim, and 3 feet deep. The stone employed is Granite from near Sandusky, Ohio. <BR><BR> “When founded, the ASPCA was the first and only humane society in the Western Hemisphere, and its formation prompted the New York State Legislature to pass the country’s first effective anti-cruelty law. Thanks to Henry Bergh, the world was rapidly becoming a better place for animals.” – ASPCA Henry Wadsworth Longfellow eulogized Bergh as “Among the noblest in the land… friend to every friendless beast.” Henry Bergh is interred at Greenwood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY.
