• DESCRIPTION: This comic print depicts a and rather stiff officer inspecting group of men ineptly enacting a militia drill. Some have rifles while others have sticks or clubs. One gentleman has a corn stalk with a bayonet attached and another holds an umbrella. Some members managing to use to poke others in the backside or to point at someone else in a dangerous fashion. Signed: "D.C. Johnston, Ill., 1832." The artist, David Claypoole Johnston (1798-1865) was a caricaturist, printmaker, painter and actor. He apprenticed to the Philadelphia engraver Francis Kearney.
