DESCRIPTION: An unusual and highly decorative advertising label for tea. This color woodcut was produced by George H. Macy & Co. for the Winfeld Wholesale Grocery Co. Winfield, Kansas. G. H. Macy & Co. was a major tea importing firm that was based in New York with offices in London, Chicago, San Francisco, and across Asia in just about every country where tea was cultivated. It had tea-processing facilities in Yokohama and Kobe, Japan, and in Shanghai, Hankow, and Amoy, China. In 1886, Carter, Macy & Co. was organized and in 1894, George H. Macy & Co. took over. It is our belief that Macy had these labels printed in Japan between 1900 and 1910 for its buyers. This label was part of a small grouping that the shop acquired. All were woodcuts and were printed on thin Japanese rice paper. Several of them had George Macy & Co. printed on them which leads us to believe that Macy was the chief publisher. Each is possibly unique as being printed on thin rice paper and an ink that is highly susceptible to water. The prints are extremely fragile which likely explains their rarity.
