  • DESCRIPTION: This portrait of Jefferson Davis was created for The Lost Cause: A New Southern History of the War of the Confederates, published in 1866 by Edward A. Pollard. As President of the Confederate States during the American Civil War (1861–1865), Davis became a symbol of the Southern rebellion. After the Confederacy’s defeat, he was captured, imprisoned, and indicted for treason.
