Hart, 99 Fulton St. <br><br> Jones Woods was a 132-acre wooded farm located between Third Avenue and the East River and 66 - 75 Street. It was proposed that this land become a large park for New York City but the owners refused to sell the land. Soon after the land for Central Park was acquired. In 1855 a family member of Jones's Wood leased out the land to be used as a picnic ground where sporting events became popular and beer gardens sprang up. The image shows a large crowd of spectators around a circular playing field on which the games are in progress. Many of the spectators and participants are wearing kilts.
