DESCRIPTION: This print is a re-strike of the original image made c.1859. This print satirizes the mail delivery contracts of the time, back when there was competition for who carried parcels. The various technologies of the time all vie to outdo the other to win the contract - several steam ships and a hot air balloon. The balloon is labled as the "California Mail Balloon via Nicaragua" and the ships are named (from left to right) Baltic, Northern light, Moses Taylor, Star of the West, and U.S.M.
