  • DESCRIPTION: The woman in this mezzotint is unidentified, but it is believed to represent either Miss Cantrell, a singer known for her performances at Vauxhall Gardens in the early 1770s, or Miss Kettle, Tilly Kettle’s wife. Whomever it is, they are depicted holding a lute, a popular instrument of the period, which aligns with both possibilities—Cantrell as a performer and Kettle as a known figure in artistic circles. The ambiguity surrounding her identity adds an intriguing layer to the portrait's historical context. Regardless of her true identity, this mezzotint stands out as a wonderful portrayal of a woman during a period when portraits predominantly depicted men.
